Sappho Speaks: The Music Of Duets

What Would Sappho Say?

Lectori Salutem! or L.S. (Greetings to the Reader!)

Again we are on one of those in between days where just the music and the quotes will change. I have picked a few duets that are not well known but I think are some really great combinations of singers. For those of you who follow Divas Live for the Save the Music foundation on VH1, some of these songs will sound familiar and to others I hope it will be a treat to your ears.

The first takes up back to one of the first rap songs of the 80’s with a fresh makeover. It is the great Debbie Harry and Blondie and the song Rapture with Eve providing the rap section. HOT, HOT, HOT!!!!

The second is a great modern take of Tina Turner’s crowd-pleasing and much remade Proud Mary. This version pairs two unlikely allies with surprising musical acumen. The amazing Beyonce teams up with the ethereal Jewel for a sound explosion with the riffs no one would have expected from the What If God Was One of Us songstress. The result is something to be experienced.

Cyndi Lauper is a bit overrepresented in this selection but when you listen to the tracks, you’ll hopefully appreciate why. This next song is a collaboration from Cyndi and Saran Malachlan on Time After Time worthy of a listen here as the best of Divas Live.

The forth song is a live version with its original songwriter and mistress diva, Patti Labelle, featuring Cyndi Lauper and Jessica Simpson, in a version that came out well before the final remake showed up on MTV. It, of course, is the great song, Lady Marmalade.

And finally, (you see on these days when there is no actual blog I may get carried away with the music choices), there is the most recent Divas Live performance by the great Cyndi Lauper and the up and coming talent with the VOICE, Leona Lewis, in a beautiful version of True Colours.

Now, all these performances are available as videos on YouTube but once again I implore you to listen to music first the way it’s intended to be heard, through the ears and the imagination only. Then you are on your own to explore a particular artists rendition of the song or in most of these cases, the live performances.

I hope you enjoy my picks today and DON'T FORGET THE FIRST INSTALLMENT OF MY EROTICA STORY IS EMBEDDED RIGHT HERE. CLICK ON THE NAME, "HOUSE OF CARDS". It is for Adults ONLY!!! QUOTES OF THE DAY
After silence, that which comes the nearest to expressing the inexpressible is music.
Aldous Huxley

I think I should have no mortal wants, if I could always have plenty of music. It seems to infuse strength into my limbs and ideas into my brain. Life seems to go on without effort, when I am filled with music.
George Eliot

This story definitely took me places in my imagination I will not soon forget. Your ability to evoke imagery and symbolism is fantastic and I can't wait till the next story to grad me and take me away to some other place that I can hold forever in my mind.
