Sappho Speaks: Yes, They Really Are Called “The Lezzies”

What Would Sappho Say?

Lectori Salutem! or L.S. (Greetings to the Reader!)

You had to know it was coming. The pompous way I write.... little Miss Know-It-All.... sooner or later I was bound to ask for something big from my readers that smelled sickly sweet of shameless self-promotion. Well, that day is almost here and I thought I better dig a trench for my readers so you couldn’t crawl out of it on the way to doing this enormously egocentric favor I am about to ask of you.

First of all, let’s talk about “The Lezzies”. I mean really, who in their right mind decides to call their awardsThe Lezzies”? No wait... probably not the best way to win fans and influence people on that particular website by knocking the award themselves now is it? To be clear, I am not diminishing the “The Lezzies” themselves, just the image that jumps to mind when I hear the name. Let me explain.

That particular moniker was definitely an elementary school term for me. I can remember all of us little kids using it without much knowledge of what it meant. Then, at age seven or eight I figured out what the term meant and that I might be one of them as I was kissing girls every chance I got. Then I had a bit of a freak out as to me it was a bit like learning you had cooties. That was the way lezzy was used in my neck of the woods. It was cooties for girls. Then you grow up a little and lezzy turns into the more hurtful and crisp word DYKE.

So, just because the word conjures up experiences for me both fun, running around kissing little girls while I was a little girl, and scary, getting the female equivalent of cooties, doesn’t mean I don’t want to be a part of “The Lezzies” today. This is a great website,The Lesbian Lifestyle is a site for gay women that posts different bloggers, me for one, as well as great editorials from Kelly Leszczynski, the managing editor who also goes by the web name goldstardyke. The site offers a cornucopia of ideas from all different kinds of women and serves as a forum for discussion on the submitted blogs, a site where you can submit your story, an advice panel for any issue you wish to take on, a place where authors can showcase their work AND of course a site which hands out the distinguished “Lezzies” each year to blogs worthy of attention in eleven different categories.

SO... Now we have gotten to the heart of the matter – the reason why I have been rambling on about the word lezzy and “The Lezzies” in particular. I am back now to that shameless self-promotion I talked of earlier and am asking my wonderful readers for some help. I won’t go on and on about all eleven different categories but I will expound on the categories I think might apply to me.

First and foremost is the BEST NEW LESBIAN BLOG (Posting for a year or less). Some of you may have only been reading my word for a few weeks, hell some only a few days, so how can you comment on whether I am in fact the best? Well, are you reading any other lesbian blogs? If the answer is “no”, then it is no contest, I WIN. Right? For those of you that read several blogs it is up to you to decide whose writing style you prefer, whose literary sensibility reaches you on a visceral level, who stirs your emotions instead of merely informs? For the rest of you, who don’t know of what I speak, please just jump on my bandwagon and help me out. I need as many votes as possible to place in a contest like this after only two and a half months of blogging so TELL YOUR FRIENDS PLEASE. I NEED THE VOTES.

There are a few other categories I would like for you to consider when you go to The Lesbian Lifestyle and cast your vote for What would Sappho Say. If you haven’t already read my short stories/erotica, run quickly to It's Erotica Time Again and read the three stories contained in it, or just click here to access them directly The House of Cards, Sunday Comes Too Soon, or The Perfect Stormand then consider casting your vote for me in the BEST LESBIAN SEX/SHORT STORY/EROTICA BLOG. The last category I feel I could easily fall under is up to you my dear readers to decide, BEST LESBIAN ENTERTAINMENT/LESBIAN CULTURE BLOG, but with blogs like Is There Such A Thing As A True Bisexual?, Hey Uncle John, Is Aunt Diana Gay?, Social Chameleons: Friend or Foe, The 5 Minute Test: An Online Dating Weed Out Exam, Has The Term Lipstick Lesbian Lost Its Luster, The Third Sex, Is It Me Or When Did All The Single Women Go Crazy?, Hate Lives Under the Softest, Smoothest Rock, etc., I think I might just qualify under the LESBIAN CULTURE portion of the category.

So here I am, pimping myself out to you my faithful or faithless, I am really unsure at this moment exactly who is out there in cyber space reading this thing, but I know it is going to take more votes than just you guys to make this happen for me and Sappho knows, I NEED THE PUBLICITY.

I have been working diligently at my end learning as much as I can about google ranking and keywords and all the other language of the net I still have yet to fully comprehend and as you can tell by the fact that words are not serendipitously repeated for effect to boost that whole rating thing.

Now this is just the information blog. The actual voting at The Lesbian Lifestyle doesn’t start until my birthday if you can believe it, February 15th. I was almost a Valentine’s baby as I was born at 4:53 AM the morning after the day of love, determined that I would have my own day of celebration and not share it with any manufactured holiday. I must say the best thing about having my birthday on the 15th of February was there was never the sting of being alone on Valentine’s Day as the next day was all about me with friends and family sending cards and presents, then calls wishing me a happy birthday were always just hours away from V Day.

So, don’t worry. When voting day starts I will be here to remind you and only hope to reign in some of your friends and use your multiple email accounts to cast your votes in my direction. Well, maybe not that, but all is fair in birthdays and blogs. It certainly can’t hurt.

Much Love.

Inspired By Sappho’s Muse

MUSIC OF THE DAY
The music for today spans twenty years but to hear them for the first time you’d be hard pressed to tell which came first. I pulled them both out of the E’s by coincidence but sometimes that just happens. It is amazing how a song can change when it is stripped of all it’s metal and drums and is simply sung acoustically with a guitar. That’s what Amy Lee and Evanescence does with My Immortal. Next up is one of my favorites from Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart as the Eurythmics. When Tomorrow Comes adds the R & B influences to their electronic music that would really come out later in Annie Lennox’s solo career.

QUOTE OF THE DAY
The truth is that while men, in our society, are encouraged to have strong egos and to function in competitive, aggressive, intellectualized modes that may indeed cause them pain, for most women the ego is like a fragile African Violet, grown in secret from a seed, carefully nursed and fertilized and sheltered from too much sun.

Thanks for your comments today. No need for a Sapphic love poem, your thoughts are much more useful to me. :)
