What Would Sappho Say?
Lectori Salutem! or L.S. (Greetings to the Reader!)
For the first time I am going to ask you to go listen to the one and only song available on today’s website and it’s by up and coming artist Kate Voegele off her first album called WISH YOU WERE. I had already been thinking of this phenomena since I had written about social chameleons and how insidious they are. When talking to my friends, I realized that it didn’t take a chameleon or any special powers at all to make us idealize the person we are with, especially those doomed relationships that leave us scratching our head, wondering why we want her back in our life so badly when the reality of her does not mesh with the vision in our heads.
A lot happens over the course of a year or 6 months, especially if you have convinced yourself that love is in the air. The beautiful, smart, funny, artist with so much talent had you backing her in every way as she put together pieces for a showing. It took awhile to realize that the only art you were going to see done by her had been completed in the distant past and the gallery showing was a pipe dream intended to draw your enthusiasm and financial support on each and every date you ever went on. She was the starving artist. IN your mind she had become so much more.

Sappho Speaks: Is It Me Or When Did The Single Women Go Crazy?
What Would Sappho Say?
Lectori Salutem! or L.S. (Greetings to the Reader!)
Well, for awhile here I thought it was a run of bad luck or somehow I was bringing it on myself, maybe I was being taught a lesson and then as I spoke to one of my best friends and then a few more I had to rethink this.
The last four women I had been around or had any interaction with I had met at very specific locations, all as different as they could be. The first I met at the symphony. She was sitting next to me and her male date had stood her up and my friend and I got to chatting with her during the intermission. She was beautiful so I did do a little harmless flirting and much to my surprise she flirted back and we ended the evening with her leaving with my number. I honestly thought that was the end of that but I heard from her a couple of days later and embarked on a six-month odyssey in the first of wildly insane journeys with vastly different yet confusing and complicated, some might say, a bit crazy women.
This first woman was so much fun at first. She loved going out with us both all dressed to the nines to the theater, a nice restaurant, or just a club and then hang on me like my girl toy. Can’t say that I didn’t like the attention, at first. Then it became part of the maintenance of our relationship because she was a big drinker but would not cross that ALCOHOLIC line of drinking at home and I really don’t drink much at all so as her walls came down over the months we were together, so did her discretion and with that her sense of decorum. I was over being the floor show and instead showed her to an AA meeting – I doubt she has made it there yet.

Sappho Speaks: The State of Hate in Today’s World
What Would Sappho Say?
Lectori Salutem! or L.S. (Greetings to the Reader!)
I talked at length about the hate in the heart of one man with a massive audience, Pat Robertson, but it has seeped down into my daily life today just as it did a few years ago in Austin, Texas as you will here in an upcoming blog.
Today was a day off for many but the reason for the holiday is a celebration of a great man, the “I have a dream...” man who awakened so many of us in the 60’s and beyond to the state of racial division in this country and the recipe for its cure.
Martin Luther King Jr. (born January 15, 1929 – April 4, 1968) was the youngest man ever to win the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 for his work to end racial segregation and racial discrimination in this country through civil disobedience and other non-violent means. He also focused his efforts on ending poverty and opposing the Vietnam War from a religious perspective when his untimely death occurred at the hands of a man whose name I shall not yet speak.
This glorious man spoke the wondrous words, “The measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, bet where he stands at times of challenges and controversy,” and was the poster for this highest measure.
It was with this man in mind that a friend of mind and I went out for a beer to toast this great leader. Just as we sat down, a man walked into the bar to wish us a “Happy James Earl Ray Day”. I couldn’t believe the words at first... It took a few seconds to register... Was this guy really saying with malice and aforethought that he was celebrating the assassin of Martin Luther King Jr.? I said, “You’ve got to be kidding?” and he just smirked. I wanted to punch him in the face but he was much bigger than my friend or I so I just started the berating of his intelligence but you know people of that ilk. The point was to raise my blood pressure and I was falling into his well-sprung trap so I stopped.
Instead we started talking a bit louder about our left of left heroes – the ones that live next door to left, one the left side, of course. Barbra Streisand, Alex Baldwin, Jimmy Carter, Al Gore, JFK, President Obama, a little Michael Moore to make it sting, The Dixie Chicks, Robert Redford, really just anyone we could think of on the fly.... Oh yeah, there was Al Sharpton even though he’s a little out of my taste but he did the trick as grunts and groans began to come from our man conveniently enough on our LEFT.
As we perused our list of lefties we also brought out our favorite agendas and those in positions of power to ensure they stay the way they are. It was just a list of names: Gingburg, Sotomayer, Breyer, Stevens, and Kennedy. Five names, but a majority where it counts! I’m not exactly sure he knew these were Supreme Court Justices so we made sure to spell it out. These are the five who will keep Roe V. Wade where it is. The court has not been overrun and it looks like the wind might be blowing our way. You just never know.
Granted, things don’t look all that pleasant as we head into midterm elections next year but there is always room for a tide change and it’s all the more reason to get out there and work for your congressman and our recently vacated mayor Bill White as he runs against Rick Perry for Governor on the Democratic ticket. Do you know how long it’s been since we have had a Democrat in the Governor's mansion? Ann Richards was the last one and Bill White could be just the man to do it too.
So... On the memorial day of a great man like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. we must look at the stormy seas of our past and the wind and rainy days ahead with our umbrellas out ready for the sun to shine brightly at any moment. We have a great man at the helm doing his best in the roughest waves we have seen in our lifetime. War, natural disasters, failing economy, healthcare crisis and he is taking it all on as a only a true leader can with grace, patience, diligence, and strength through the unrest and unpopular times any president would face. He “has a dream” too and will take us through a little closer to “...the Promised Land...”
Happy Martin Luther King Jr. Day!
Much Love.

MUSIC OF THE DAY
The first song of the day is a song Will.I.Am wrote during the Obama campaign to capture the spirit of America and I feel it really captures MLK's as well as the resilience and goodness of the American people. It is aptly titled America's Song and features the likes of Bono, Mary J Blige, Faith Hill, and Seal with David Foster producing and tickling the ivories. It's a must hear. While you listen remember how good we have it and when you think of Haiti in the coming weeks, give generously, if not monetarily, take goods like clothes, cooking supplies, whatever to the Red Cross. The second song is from a great artist, Miss Joan Armatrading, called All The Way From America. If you've never heard either of these songs, you are in for a treat. These are great songs! ***** 5 stars, my word!

QUOTE OF THE DAY
The ultimate tragedy is not the oppression and cruelty by the bad people but the silence over that by the good people.
Martin Luther King Jr.
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.
